HISTORY OF THE REGION

Corfu Holiday Palace is situated at the evergreen "Κanoni" [Cannon] peninsula site of the ancient city of Corcyra.  The actual "Κanoni" appellation derives from a gun that was placed in 1803 by a Russian artillery unit during a Turkish invasion against the island.  The original site of the gun is preserved on a bed plate beside our hotel’s swimming pool.

In our hotel’s area, the front side views the Pondikonissi, which is the mark of Corfu.
Across it is the picturesque Vlacherna Monastery (17th century)..Απέναντι βρίσκεται η γραφική Μονή της Βλαχέρενας (17 αιώνα).
The backside of the hotel looks to the Chalikiopoulou  lake, another historical site, were during the antiquity was situated the Hyllaic port, in whose inlet a temple of Artemis (580-570 b.C.) was built.

At the entrance of the peninsula, we meet the ‘Mon Repos’ palace, used as a Royal Summer residence (from1964 to 1967).  Inside the Mon Repos estate there are findings of Hera [Juno] Akrea and Apollo Korkyreos temples (end 7th – mid 6th century b.C.).  In the greater Kanoni area there are findings of the Apollo Aguiea temple and a second one of Artemis [Dianna], and also a marble Kouros (530 b.C.), representing Apollo.  This very important finding was found in the area of the picturesque Agia Kassopitra monastery (end of 17 century).  The excavation works are pursued in many places at the Kanoni and new findings are discovered.
